Cholera remains a persistent public health challenge in Nigeria, with recurrent outbreaks reported in flood-prone areas such as Benue State. Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae, is primarily transmitted through contaminated water and food (WHO, 2023). Floods significantly increase the risk of cholera outbreaks by compromising water sources, leading to poor sanitation, and promoting the spread of the disease (Okeke et al., 2024).
Benue State, known for seasonal flooding, has experienced multiple cholera outbreaks over the years. In 2023, the state recorded a surge in cases following severe floods that displaced thousands of residents (Ogundele & Eze, 2024). Despite government and non-governmental efforts to control the disease, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, limited clean water supply, and poor hygiene practices continue to fuel outbreaks.
Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play a crucial role in cholera prevention through community education, surveillance, vaccination campaigns, and emergency response efforts (Adamu et al., 2025). By providing health education on proper sanitation, personal hygiene, and safe drinking water practices, nurses can help mitigate the risks associated with cholera outbreaks. However, the effectiveness of nurses' roles in flood-prone areas of Benue State remains underexplored, necessitating further investigation into their contributions to cholera prevention.
Despite ongoing efforts to prevent cholera outbreaks in Benue State, flood-prone areas continue to experience recurrent cases. Poor sanitation, inadequate access to clean water, and limited public awareness exacerbate the situation. Nurses, as primary healthcare providers in these communities, have the potential to significantly reduce the risk of cholera outbreaks through health education and preventive measures. However, the extent to which nurses are involved in cholera prevention, the challenges they face, and the effectiveness of their interventions remain unclear.
This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in preventing cholera outbreaks in flood-prone areas of Benue State. By assessing their contributions, challenges, and the impact of their interventions, the study will provide valuable insights into improving cholera prevention strategies in the region.
This study focuses on flood-prone areas of Benue State, where cholera outbreaks frequently occur. It will assess the role of nurses in cholera prevention, the effectiveness of health education programs, and challenges faced by healthcare workers. Limitations include difficulties in collecting real-time data during outbreaks and potential variations in community responses to health education.
